Austin police chief Art Acevedo confirmed that murder charges will be filed against Criner this afternoon saying: ‘We are certain that the subject we have in custody is the suspect responsible.’
Criner – who was living homeless – was apprehended after he tried to torch some of Weiser’s belongings.
Firefighters who responded to the fire recognized him from security footage and informed police.
Criner was taken by force to homeless shelter Life Works Monday by Austin Fire Department and was in possession of a woman’s bike and a backpack.
He was arrested Thursday without incident and has since been charged with first degree murder.
Upon his arrest Austin Police seized the bike and the backpack – which matched the description of the small blue duffle bag belonging to the victim.
An unnamed woman who reported the fire to the FD also recognized a similarity between a person at the fire and the person with a bicycle in a surveillance video, and called in the information to police.
Haruka Weiser, 18, from Portland, Oregon, a first-year theater and dance student at the university, was found dead in Waller creek on campus Tuesday.
